MEASURING THE STATE OF THE BIOSPHERE

USING CORE PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

We believe that the Noosa Biosphere Reserve (NBR) is much more than a reward for past and current achievements. It is also a challenge for the future. The NBR is a work-in-progress: an ongoing experiment in sustainable living that encompasses the entire community.

It is therefore essential that the progress and momentum of the NBR be measurable. The Noosa Biosphere Association Inc. is committed to engaging with all the stakeholders to develop not just targets and strategies, but also criteria for assessing the NBR's performance.

At present we are working at a fundamental level to devise the theoretical basis on which a strategic plan can be built. (The finer details will gradually appear on this website in due course.)

In a nutshell, the first draft goes like this....

There are 9 overarching objectives by which the NBR's progress can be measured. These 9 objectives are framed as questions in 3 categories.

CONSERVATION OBJECTIVES

* Is there increased biodiversity protection within the NBR?

ECOLOGICALLY SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OBJECTIVES

* Is the existing population cap being maintained?

* Is the NBR reducing its carbon footprint?

* Is there a reduction in greenhouse emissions within the NBR?

* Is there an improvement of visual amenity (signage, buildings, greenery, parklands, etc) within the NBR?

* Is there a demonstrable impact from education and research on the ecologically sustainable behaviour of NBR residents? (see below)

EDUCATION AND RESEARCH OBJECTIVES

* Is there increased public knowledge and awareness of the NBR's cultural, natural and conservation heritage?

* Is there increased public knowledge and awareness of the objectives, strategies and aims of the NBR?

* Has there been an increase in the amount of published research relating to the NBR's natural, cultural and conservation heritage issues?
